The health care industry is expanding, despite the sad situation the American economy and career market is in, and more and more post high school students are flocking towards becoming a part of one of the only hiring job markets available today. But recently, a bachelor in nursing won’t get a student as far as it might once have. The general information is there, but many students who have found themselves interested in a medical or health care careers are no longer satisfied with a bachelor of science in nursing and have turned to more advanced degrees. Since the health care industry is one of the only job markets hiring right now, nursing degrees in any form are getting swept up by hundreds of thousands of students and the careers are getting flooded with candidates who possess the general knowledge nurses need to get adequate jobs. That is where an advanced degree will prove a useful tool for those who decide to further pursue their nursing career. If a student has gone to the trouble of staying in school and studying advanced degrees, he or she will likely be the first one considered for nursing jobs of his or her choice.

A Master’s in Nursing degree allows its possessor to qualify for much more specialized positions, as well.  Some of these more advanced positions fall into the following categories.

Nurse Practitioners: Holders of this position perform several of the same types of tasks that registered nurses and licensed professional nurses perform, but possess many more responsibilities in addition to these basic functions. Some of the additional tasks may include, writing prescriptions, running a practice, and basic tasks traditionally carried out by doctors.

Clinical Nurse Specialist: Nurses who have earned their Master’s degree can take up these positions that emphasize different areas of care other than patient care, like education, research, and management.

Certified Nurse Midwife: This specialized field offers nurses the opportunity to work with prenatal or gynecological departments as primary caregivers for expecting mothers.

And Certified Nurse Anesthetist: This field of specialty is one of the most lucrative a nurse can pursue and gives the nurses the responsibility to administer anesthetics before surgery.
