Online Distance Education
This site is about education – online, distance learning and the joy and lifestyle of learning – for a lifetime.
I have personally taught online at the College level for 12+ years. I have found the students to be older in general but also quite engaged and interested in learning. And the process is so much more convenient for them. It was in fact the convenience factor that led my wife to earn her master’s degree online from a school in the California State University system. With 3 kids at home, learning online was ideal – not easy, but a perfect fit.
What will you find here?
At both this site and our main online education – distance learning site you will find information and materials that will help to clarify your decision. Should you attend college and/or take classes online or at a regular campus? There are advantages to both. Let me also say 2 things:
We have provided you banners and links of some good educational companies that might also help you with your decision. If you buy anything from these companies, we will likely get paid a referral fee – but believe me when I say that these are good companies and that is why we advertise for them. So feel free to check them out. No one will spam you, but you may well find a good starting point as you look at their sites.
An example of a trusted advertiser:
Suffield University developed our Prior Learning Program to reward those individuals who have the knowledge required for a university degree, but until now, were denied the better job or promotion they deserved.
Suffield’s prior learning program allows those individuals without the time or financial resources for a traditional school to obtain the degrees they have earned through the experiential learning process.
We allow various writers to post articles on this site. Most are quite good, but we are going through them to determine their overall relevance and will continue editing them as we go. On occasion you will find that some do not “write the king’s English” all that well. But many of them still provide good information.
Thanks for stopping by. We trust that you find the online degree and class information that will encourage your future success.
Why is Online Education Growing?
Well, it has great credibility these days. It started with a few colleges and universities, but now nearly every upper level university and even tech schools have started and run thriving online education programs. In fact, check out Stanford and Harvard University. Life Experience Degrees and full online university degrees have indeed turned out to be a blessing in disguise for a lot of working adults or students who are hindered in their career aspirations due to educational limitations. These degrees have enabled working people around the world to reach new heights in their respective fields when there are no other alternatives.
Accreditation and Online Degrees
Accreditation is always something to check, do NOT assume that online programs can not be or are not accredited. That is simply not correct. The vast majority of online education programs are in facy accredited. Plus, the Internet offers prospective college students a wealth of information regarding many different aspects of the education process, including how to apply for financial aid, how to choose the right college for you and a variety of other information.
Are you a Good Candidate for Distance – Online Education?
Distance learning is different than most are used to doing. Online education has special challenges. You will probably never see or meet the teacher or your classmates. You don’t have a campus full of people studying the same academic discipline. But you can succeed and will succeed by planning ahead, and working hard (sounds like most success plans doesn’t it? That’s because it ALWAYS works!) Consider the points below – they’ll serve you well.
- Online education is especially useful for
- Busy parents
- Single parents
- Professionals or anyone who needs more education
- Those who work full time
- Those who want to earn a degree from a school such as Ohio State University, but live in Arizona, California or even Florida.
- People who require some time flexibility and convenience.
- Just about anyone who is a self starter and disciplined enough to push themselves without a lot of accountability.
Set goals and choose to succeed!
At the beginning of a new course, look through the materials. Break the lessons/assignments into manageable chunks. You might not have time to do
a full lesson in one night, so plan for how much you can do, then stick to it until you’re done. You can read a 990 page textbook in 30 days by simpy reading 33 pages per day. Now THAT is possible!
Establish a regular study/learning schedule.
Set a timer – work in 50 minute increments, then take a break-walk around and stretch. Drink some water or have a light snack. Keep a calendar or journal with your study goals and important dates clearly marked-and look at it every day (a calendar can’t help you if it’s closed!). Determine what time is best for you to study. Is it after dinner on Wednesdays when your partner is at bowling? Is it Saturday mornings when the kids are at soccer? If possible, have a dedicated study place with all the supplies you might need (computer, paper, pens, calculator, etc.)
An online education is an excellent choice for many. You can earn an AA degree as well as a BA, Masters and even doctoral level degrees. If you feel that you can benefit from this approach to learning than by all means take the plunge!!
